Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible.

Doug Larson

Through stories, memory is kept alive. Many cultures throughout the world and in the United States preserve memory through stories, especially noted in Native American and African American cultures. Native Americans use story to teach trades, religion, and custom. Africans, who for centuries had no way of preserving their thoughts in writing, depended on stories to order and teach members of their communities. As a result, the stories have been passed from one generation to the other.

"Long ago, they say, when the earth was not yet finished, darkness lay upon the water and they rubbed each other. The sound they made was like the sound at the edge of a pond. There, on the water, in the darkness, in the noise, and in a very strong wind, a child was born." —Papago Narrative

"It is only the story that can continue beyond the war and the warrior. It is the story that outlives the sound of war-drums and the exploits of brave fighters. It is the story...that saves our progeny from blundering like blind beggars into the spikes of the cactus fence."
