Telling Stories to Children
For children, storytelling is more important now than ever before. Today, more than ever before, there is a vast array of story-driven entertainment that compete for the attention of our children: television, comic books, video games, and movies, etc. According to psychotherapists, children need activities which require their own imaginations to be active. Development of imagination is one of the most significant functions of Storytelling. Storytelling also teaches children a great deal about the use of language, narrative form, how to interact with others, and how to live morally. Storytelling between a parent and their child creates an atmosphere of open communication and a bond of trust. Even more than stories read out of books, children love to hear the personal accounts of their parents; it helps them to feel that they are not alone in the world facing their problems and provides a vision of what they can become.
