What we say is important... for in most cases the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

Jim Beggs

"Just because we have book and television sets shouldn't mean we forget how to tell stories...My hope is that each of us, at some point in our lives, will say, 'Hold on. I know that someone can do it better, but I want to try this myself. It looks like fun."

Peter Seeger, Storyteller

Stacking Televisions

In a world that already offers so many prepackaged stories in form of film, TV, videos, books, and magazines, why should we bother to create more? A story about an anthropologist who went to a small village in Africa reveals the answer. A year before the Anthropologist's visit, the village had been given the wonderful gift of electricity. In a whirl, television sets filled every hut. A year later, during his visit, the anthropologist discovered a collection of stacked television sets in an abandoned hut at the edge of the village. The anthropologist was confused, so he inquired of the head-man.

Anthropologist: Why don't you use your television sets?

Head Man: We have a storyteller.

Anthropologist: Maybe so, but the television knows thousands of stories.

Head Man: That's true, but the storyteller knows us.
