Discovering Family Stories "Family Stories - every
family has them. Told at gatherings of the relatives or the extended family,
they are those stories about 'the time when' that help family define their
identity and stay in touch with who they are."--- Donald Davis.
Donald Davis, one of the founders of the current
renaissance of storytelling in America, and one of the featured storytellers
in The Call of Story, distills years of experience into many helpful hints
for those of us seeking to find family stories. Much of the following
information can be found in his book: Telling Your Own Stories, Pub. August
House, 1993. His complete works on the topic can be found at the following
web site:

Who has the Stories? Well, which stories do you want
to know? Grandparents, brothers, sister, uncles, aunts, and parents all
have stories. Ask them for their stories. Often they will start by saying
they don't have any stories, so you are going to have to help prompt them.
Use one or all of the following prompting techniques to get into their
story memories.
